Nursing procedures range from veterinary support in consults and surgery to the daily care of hospitalised patients. Nursing support includes the preparation of equipment, materials, medications and the patient; monitoring anaesthesia, providing assistance in theatre, administering drugs, providing wound care, drain maintenance, critical care and infection control.
ACMVET510A: Apply Veterinary Nursing Pathophysiology
- Covers the skills and knowledge necessary to apply veterinary pathophysiology in general veterinary practice. Pathophysiology involves the recognition of abnormal function caused by disease. Application of this knowledge supports veterinary diagnosis and treatment. This Unit covers the fundamentals of disease and common disease processes. It includes diagnostic tests, treatment options and nursing care. A practical understanding of veterinary pathophysiology enables nurses to better support veterinary recommendations, encourage owner compliance, and improve patient outcomes.
ACMVET511A: Apply Principles of Animal Behaviour
- Covers the skills and knowledge necessary to assess and respond to animal behaviour in general veterinary practice. The Unit covers the fundamentals of behavioural medicine, which includes the promotion of behavioural health and appropriate intervention strategies for behaviour problems. It requires a holistic application of veterinary nursing, distinguishing normal and abnormal behaviours, acceptable and unacceptable behaviours, current behavioural therapies, animal legislation and effective client communication.

- Covers the process required by an individual responsible for ongoing management of workplace health and safety within an area of management responsibility, where the workplace health and safety management processes have been set up by other persons, either internal or external to the organisation.

- Covers the skills and knowledge required to develop strategies to manage organisational systems that ensure products and services are delivered and maintained to standards agreed by the organisation.
