Higher Level Skills Program

Available for Queensland residents only to study Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing.

ACM40418 Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing is a nationally accredited course and upon completion you will be considered a qualified veterinary nurse in Australia.

What is the Higher Level Skills Program?

The Higher Level Skills program is a Queensland Government initiative. It offers funded training for qualifications identified as providing high level skills, meeting employment and business demands in priority industries.

The aim is to assist Queenslanders in securing employment, career advancement or transition to university. You can read more about the program policy on the Department of Education and Training website. The Department also has a fact sheet available for students: Higher Level Skills factsheet.

Students can only receive access to the Higher Level Skills program subsidy once, so before you enrol, make sure you have considered your options before committing to this course.

Applicability and Eligibility

To be eligible to receive funding under the Higher Level Skills program, you must be:

a Queensland resident
over 15 years or over, and no longer at school
an Australian or New Zealand citizen or Australian permanent resident (including humanitarian entrants), or a temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency
not hold, or be enrolled in, a certificate IV level or higher qualification (not including qualifications completed at school and foundation skills training).

You will need to supply documentary evidence of your eligibility.

Program Cost

While the program is subsidised, the student is still required to pay a co-contribution fee. This fee can be paid by the student, their employer, or a third party.

The total cost of the program is $3150 for non-concessional students, or $1869 for concessional students. Eligibility for concession includes:

Aboriginal students
Health Care Card or Pensioner Card holder, or be a dependent of someone holding a card and is named on the card
The co-contribution fee is charged on a unit basis, for the units to be studied in the semester. Each unit is $150 or $89 for concessional students. Please note: The full break-down of each instalment can be found in section 9 of the enrolment form (“Course Structure and Payments”).

Students will only have access to units paid for. No fees will be charged for credit transfers.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, students are required to be working as a veterinary nurse for a minimum of 8 hours per week in paid employment. Employment must be maintained for the duration of the course. If the student changes workplaces, a “Change of details” form is available online, on the course website.

The pre-requisites for this course include:

Have completed Year 10 or be a mature aged student
Minimum of 10 hours paid work per week in a Veterinary Facility
Have one of the following:
- Certificate II in Animal Studies
- Equivalent skills and knowledge to the Certificate II in Animal Studies
- A relevant Certificate III or higher qualification in an animal science discipline
